What a year 2009 was for our Brit!

From releasing and promoting a new album, staging one of the biggest concerts of the year and unveiling another fragrance to her Fantasy range – one would say it’s been a very successful one.

In January, the single ‘Circus‘ was one of Australia’s biggest radio songs, and reached #1 on iTunes Australia before it was released late January – when it debut at #6 on the ARIA chart, and stayed in Top 50 for 14 weeks.

During this time, rumour hit fever point as gimmeBRITNEY reported more information of a possible Australian tour.  We just didn’t know how right we were until a few months later.

Late February, the 3rd single ‘If U Seek Amy‘ was released.  Although it only reached #11 locally after 14 weeks, it proved to be a huge hit on Australian radio – and even sparked controversy with its racy lyrics.

On March 25th, gimmeBRITNEY received a tip off – and some leaked info – that Britney would indeed tour Australia.

The 4th single, ‘Radar‘ was intentionally ignored as a single in Australia due to it already having a release on August 26th, 2007.  However this did not stop radio stations across the country from playing the song – which reached as high as #3 on the Today Network’s Hot 30 Countdown.

On June 9th, 2009 the official word came through – Britney was on her way for her first Australian tour.

July 13th saw a tip-off from one of our close contacts, where gimmeBRITNEY exclusively revealed that Britney was set to release a Greatest Hits album by the end of the year, including new material.  A day later on July 14th, we announced the name of the upcoming release as ‘The Singles Collection‘.

The following weeks, gimmeBRITNEY went on the definsive over claims that our news was false – and other fansites went into meltdown over the news that we’d announced only days before.  On August 2nd, Amazon listed the release – although fans and other sites still were reluctant to believe the info.

On August 12th, Sony Music Australia listed ‘The Singles Collection’ on their upcoming release schedule.  MTV also added it to their page.

If all the leaks weren’t enough for us, gimmeBRITNEY then exclusively announced that a new Britney single would hit radio on September 21.  We think that collapsed the Britney world a little.

On September 24th, the news was officially announced.  Britney would release a Greatest Hits album, ‘The Singles Collection‘ – and the first single would be called ‘3‘ – and it would head to radio within the week.

Hours earlier, gimmeBRITNEY released the official lyrics.  ‘3‘ then made its US radio debut on September 28th 2009.  It was played for the first time on Australian radio minutes later, although Sony Music Australia did not release the song the radio until a week after the US radio date.

October 10th saw the release of the ‘3‘ single.  Although it had been on iTunes for a month before – reaching #1 during this time, the single reached #6 (#12 in NZ) and stayed in the Top 50 for 12 weeks on the ARIA chart.

Britney landed in Sydney, Australia early on November 4th 2009, before quickly flying off to Perth – as she prepared for her Australian tour.

Despite a media backlash during her stay in Australia for the Circus tour, record crowds attended sold out shows across the country to see what all the fuss was about.  Many fans were left wanting more, while others had less than postive things to say (see gimmeBRITNEY archives).

On November 24th, gimmeBRITNEY revealed to expect studio album number 7.

Britney wrapped up her Australian tour a couple of days before her 28th birthday, on December 2nd which she celebrated back in Los Angeles.

December 12th saw a very unusual, yet thought-provoking question regarding the Circus tour stage.

These are only a few of the events that happened on gimmeBRITNEY over last year.  You can head over to our community if you’d like to read up on them all.  As we head towards our first birthday, we’d like to thank all our members and readers each day for supporting the site.  We look forward to doing the same during 2010.

Keep an eye out for how Britney faired last decade in Australia.  We’ll post as soon as the info is out there.
